I thought the question was favorite bass players, not best bass player. I also think you both underestimate Tom Araya. Sure, I wouldn't call him a great bass player( he is no Steve Harris) but he definantly has some skills. He does play some incredibly fast and somewhat difficult bass lines while singing at the same time!!!!

Well, if Billy Sheehan was dead like Burton, compared to even me he could play shit. Not a valid point.

All depends on what you're playing !!
If you only make 1 power chord in all the song, you can sing ver easely !! Indeed, it's generally more simple to sing and play bass cause not many songs have a hard bass line... (try to play some fast Red Hot songs, for example like ^Easely^... )

Well, as a bass player my self. I have three players I try to get influence from.

Troy Sanders from Mastodon:

A bass player with a lot of personality and a great stage presence. And also has a great style of playing. The sound of his bass is great, love the fuzz box he uses. Very good stuff.

Jason Newsted:

Needs no introduction, has a great stage presence, loves music to his bones. Has no childern, he says ^The music is my children^...
Got to love a person so devoted too music. Also, his music and playing style is great and uniq.

Cliff Burton:

The bassis who wants to play guitar *chuckles*. Just look on some of his solos, and listen to Master of Puppets. I need not say more.
