just wanted to remind everyone of matt pike and high on fire! all of their music is fucking stellar, in my opinion. anyone who digs anything in the stoner, doom, post-metal, and maybe progressive rock realm will probably really love High on fire and matt's legendary older band , sleep. Check out some tracks from their new album "Death is this Communion" and support!

Matt Pike was the guitarist of stoner rock/metal band Sleep and is now the guitarist/vocalist of the Bay Area stoner/doom metal band High on Fire. High on Fire is on a consistent touring schedule, and their contract with Relapse Records is still active, having just released Death is this Communion is September 2007.

Matt Pike founded the band in 1998 with drummer Des Kensel and bassist George Rice (from Dear Deceased, who originally auditioned to be the band's vocalist). The band's first recordings were released on 12th Records, with a full-length entitled The Art of Self Defense released later on Man's Ruin Records. (That album would later be re-released by Tee Pee Records as Man's Ruin Records had become defunct.) The band then signed a deal with Relapse Records and recorded the album Surrounded by Thieves, released in 2002. After a vigorous touring cycle promoting that album, bassist George Rice left the band. The band's next album, 2005's Blessed Black Wings, was largely written by Pike and Kensel before recording took place, and ex-Melvins/Thrones bassist Joe Preston joined them later in the studio. After about a year of touring to promote their latest release, the band again lost their bassist (rumored to be a result of the hectic touring schedule combined with the pervasive after-show partying). Zeke bassist Jeff Matz joined up to help the band finish touring, later becoming a full-time member and contributing to the recording of their next album with famed producer, Jack Endino (Nirvana/Mudhoney). The new record entitled Death Is This Communion was released in September 2007 after a small string of Northwest shows to promote new material on the album. The band is doing a headline tour of North America in September and October 2007, with support from the Japanese post-rock band Mono, along with Panthers and Coliseum.

They're quite good. I have been listening that album. It just needs few more spins before I can say anything about it.

amen, brothers. thanks for the link; that's some great stuff.

my favorite: "Blessed Black Wings"..

5. Blessed Black Wings

Long to live the path that saves my soul
away adapted forced to live so low
Gone's the will to want to see the light
somber visions cause the path I've strived
Sooth the sayer revels in my death
some would think I'm just a lunatic
The blood I bleed must be black indeed
speak the devil in my time of need

Blessed black wings

Subterranean the house of worms
enter in and let my voice be heard
They call to me bearing evil grins
accounting all here is the den of sins

Blessed black wings

Pleasure's treasures leave me hypnotized
blacking out, follow the trail of lies
Demons seen with a knife in back
eat your mouth out with your cocaine slack
Shadow powder makes me come alive
walking zombie mumbles depressed sighs
The blood I bleed must be black indeed
speak the devil in my time of need

Blessed black wings
