My brother bought a bass from this website because he wanted a cheap Fender Bass. I have played on it and I am impressed by the quality....I don't think you can go wrong, especially if you are on a budget.

For metal or hardrock, you might want to check the LTD 400 series (not sure about the number). Those have EMG pickups and an active circuit, quite versatile basses. ~ Lord Abortion c 2009
